Think you’re savvy about Canada’s second-largest city? Here are some things that you might not know…
10. Vibrant rue Saint-Catherine is in the heart of Le Village – Montreal’s thriving gay scene. The street is lined with bars, restaurants, clubs and public art displays.
9. Cirque de Soleil was founded in Montreal, but the show doesn’t have a large following there. Go figure, eh?
8. BYO restaurants are extremely popular – its very common to see people walking around the city with half-drunk bottles of wine, on their way to and from dinner.
7. Montreal has the second highest number of restaurants per capita of any North American city (2nd only to NYC).
6. Lots and lots of people smoke – the city has the highest percentage of smokers in North America.
5. Jacob Schick – the dude who invented the electric razor – is buried in Montreal’s Mount Royal Cemetery.
4. 35% of all radio content aired (in all of Canada actually) must be “Canadian Content.” That’s a whole lotta Beiber and Celine Dion!
3. The city is known for: bagels, poutine (french fries smothered in cheese curds and brown gravy), smoked meats (pastrami) and maple syrup. Just not all at the same time.
2. Montreal’s name was adapted from Mount Royal, the mountain around which the city was built. Its now the city’s largest public park and its layout was designed by the same guy who did NYC’s Central Park.
1. Trivial Pursuit (of board game fame) was founded in Montreal, by two local newspaper editors, in 1979.
Gotta love fun facts! That’s crazy that Montreal follows NYC as most restaurants in North America. I would never have guessed that!
What great info for my upcoming trip to Montreal! Sad to see that a lot of folks smoke, but happy to hear about BYOB 🙂
I have a special place in my heart for poutine. I could eat that stuff every day of my life and never get sick of it.
