After finding my way north to Aalborg and checking in with the International Student Coordinator from Aalborg Universitet, I was given the address to my new flat in the city. Which turned out not to really be in the city at all, but north of it, across the Limfjord in the town of Nørresundby.
Finding the flat was a challenge in itself, as the “street” was actually a tiny 50 foot long alley.
Up 3 flights of stairs was a small, bright studio flat.
Not much to it – a living/sleeping space, bathroom and kitchenette. But for one person it was perfect (save for the lack of an oven which I came to miss greatly).
Being the first time I had ever lived completely by myself without roommates, I was eager to unpack and get settled.
One of the best features of the flat was its proximity to a massive hilltop park that overlooked all of Nørresundby and Aalborg.
This park served as a running course (that hill was a killer!), quiet reading spot, bonfire venue, and sports field.
Almost everyone else in my courses lived south of the fjord, and the park became the only real reason for anyone to make the trip north.
Though Denmark certainly isn’t known for crime, I can honestly say that I have never felt more safe and comfortable anywhere else that I’ve lived. I had no apprehension living by myself, walking alone or exploring new neighborhoods. My only regret is that I didn’t spend more time checking out the surrounding areas.
