The Russian subway system is second only to Tokyo as the most used underground network in the world.
And each station was designed to be a personal palace for everyday Russian citizens.
As such, each stop is unique and glamorous far beyond normal subway standards.
From marble floors and columns to gleaming chandeliers, the stations are immaculate.
I had read an article about the newest station to open (just this past June), honoring the works of Dostoevsky, and was eager to see it. Twenty years in the making, it was the most controversial station ever built as many feared the graphic murals depicting Dostoevsky’s novels would cause depression or even suicidal tendencies. After hours riding every line and asking several station workers where stop was located, I gave up and never found it.
