Photo Friday: Hvar, Croatia

After roaming around Old Town Dubrovnik and lounging on the beaches of Korčula, Jules and I hopped a ferry to the island of Hvar for a day.

We secured a Sobe for the evening, that overlooked the harbor and town center (and it had a washing machine)!

Packs stored, we headed down the hill to the main cobble-stoned town square where we met two other Aussie chicas (Jules is from Oz) on a Gap year, round the world trip.

We instantly hit it off and within a few hours, the four of us were cruising around the Adriatic Sea in our very own boat.

Taking turns driving, we explored the island’s various bays and coves and ventured out to other small nearby islands.

We selected a sailboat and yacht dotted inlet and dropped anchor for the afternoon.

Swimming and laying out were the order of the day, along with mingling and sharing shots of delicious plum brandy with some of the other boaters.

After a glorious day in the sun (during which time I acquired quite the attractive sunburn), we climbed into our boat to head back to Hvar city.

And then the motor wouldn’t start.  Now, I consider myself to be a pretty outdoorsy/handy gal, but I know absolutely nothing about boats.  And neither did the other girls.

Thankfully, one of our plum brandy swigging, yacht owning buddies noticed our plight and lent a hand; completely dismantling and rebuilding our boat’s motor.  And, vuala!  The thing started right up!

Back in Hvar city we showered, grabbed a deliciously fresh dinner and then hit the town.

As our time on the islands came to a close, I couldn’t help but wonder why Croatia wasn’t a more sought-after destination (this was in 2006).  Five years later however, it seems that travelers have discovered and embraced the understated splendor of Hrvatska.

This traveler has discovered Croatia. I am SOOOO eager to go – from what I’ve read about it just this past year or so, it sounds so awesome. Clear blue water, soft sand beaches, ancient architecture – everything I love.
