One of Denmark’s biggest claims to fame is the invention of the LEGO.
LEGOS are a huge point of national pride so its not surprising that DK has created a global chain of amusement parks surrounding the little bricks – LEGOLAND!
LEGOLAND in Billund is the flagship park and while its not the largest or most extravagant amusement park, its one of my favorites.
Not only are the detailed LEGO creations fascinating (more on that later), but the rides and attractions are great!
There’s a DUPLO Zone.
A life-sized LEGO Castle.
Fire Truck races, after which you get your LEGO Truck driving license and certification.
Even on a rainy day, its impossible to resist going on the uber-cliché Viking Ship water ride.
A Note to all Amusement Parks with Water Rides: Invest in some Dry-Inn machines! These things are fantastic…for .50 cents, you get two minutes in your own personal drying room. Very clever LEGOLAND.
Some of the rides, though marketed as Children’s Rides, would not be kosher in US parks, even for adults. (I loved them all!)
There’s the LEGO Safari, that lacks a seat belt or safety harness and yet shoots you around the track faster than the Matterhorn at Disneyland.
The Power Builder, which allows you to choreograph and program all the twists, turns and spins for your own individual ride. Its a very cool concept, but the ride itself is a jarring series of thrashing movements and violent stops that could give a stunt pilot whiplash.
And then there’s the pièce de résistance, The Caterpillar. A seemingly innocent, brightly colored ride on a small circular track.
Now, I’m a roller-coaster junkie and I do not exaggerate when I say that for its size, The Caterpillar is the fastest and yet most understated coaster I’ve been on. In this case, the lack of safety harnesses meant that we were white knuckling the car railing to avoid being thrown from the ride.
And since not many people were in the park that day, we got to stay on the ride over and over and over – 6 times in a row!
I loved the pictures I bet you had a lot of fun! I would love to take my boys there some time.
Awww this makes me nostalgic! The husband and I fell in love in Denmark–we lived together there–and this was one of the first big trips we took around the country alone! Need to go back…
I love how you posted so many photos of your adventure. I want a Dry-Inn for my house.
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment.
I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
Thank You
