Capital Comparison: Ottawa vs. DC

As a current Washington DC resident, I admittedly have a strong bias; one that I was certain could not be swayed by a week in Ottawa. But I was caught off guard by everything that the Canadian capital had to offer and wondered how the two cities would stack up.So which North American capital city deserves bragging rights? Is Ottawa or DC more visitor friendly? Dun dun dun…

Centers of Government
Canadian Parliament Hill– is a horseshoe-shaped cluster of Gothic-style buildings that houses Canada’s democratic government. The brick facade is punctuated by lancet arches, wrought-iron railings, intricate sculptures and topped with green copper roofing. Known as the Hill.

US Capitol Building– is a dome-topped, white marble structure that facilitates action from both the House and Senate. Covering four acres, the building anchors the east end of the National Mall and is arguably one of the most iconic architectural works in America. Also known as the Hill.

And the winner is: Tie
Both are impressive buildings and while the US Capitol stands out more in the DC skyline, Parliament’s intricate details make it more interesting aesthetically.

_________

Markets
ByWard Market – A bustling indoor and outdoor daily market featuring local flowers, produce, meats and crafts that spans several blocks. The market has been operational for over 185 years and is a central location for festivals and public gatherings.

Eastern Market – has been a DC fixture for nearly 140 years. While the indoor market is open daily, weekends see an influx of produce, craft and home-goods vendors at outdoor booths.

And the winner is: Ottawa
ByWard has more diverse offerings and its city center location means easy access.

_________

Leadership Housing
24 Sussex Drive– Apparently Canada doesn’t actually want anyone to see the residence of the Prime Minister as its blocked from view by a thick grove of trees. Situated on the narrow Sussex Drive on one side and a cliff on the other, its difficult to stop and see from any angle.

The White House – is on display for all to see. Although you can’t get too up close and personal with the residence without a tour, you can get right up to the gate on both sides of the building. Also, being situated next to Lafayette Park allows for large gatherings and demonstrations.

And the winner is: DC
For the simple fact that visitors can actually see it.
_________

Getting Around
Ottawa – While the city is flat (no hills to speak of) points of interest are spread out all over town meaning its not feasible to walk everywhere. Buses, cabs or bikes are needed to get around to more far flung museums, government buildings and parks.
DC – Most major attractions, monuments and museums can be found along the two-mile long National Mall. Other points of interest can be accessed easily by public transportation.
And the winner is: DC
Both cities are relatively easy to navigate, but DC’s layout is much more user friendly for visitors.

_________

Chinatown
Ottawa– A viable Chinatown with block after block of Chinese restaurants, shops and residences and frequent public markets and festivals.

DC– With only a handful of Chinese restaurants and a Starbucks and Anthropology with their names in Chinese characters, DC’s Chinatown is pretty much a joke.

And the winner is: Ottawa
No contest.
_________

Flower Festivals
Tulip Festival– Ottawa’s annual celebration of tulips and friendship with the Netherlands that lasts the entire month of May. Tulips can be seen all over the city and the festival includes concerts, parades, and special events.

Cherry Blossom Festival– DC’s annual celebration of cheery blossoms and friendship with Japan that lasts from mid-March through April. While blossoms abound, high concentration areas are swamped with tourists. The festival features nearly daily events, demonstrations and concerts.

And the winner is: Tie
While the Cherry Blossom Festival offers far more special events around town, the Tulip Festival allows for a more relaxed viewing experience.
_________

Sports
Ottawa– There’s only one professional sports team in Ottawa, the Senators. And sure Canadians love hockey, but seems like there should be some more diversity.

DC– Not only does DC have a hockey team, (the Capitals) but the city is also home to other successful teams including Washington Redskins football, Nationals baseball, Wizards basketball and DC United soccer.

And the winner is: DC
Variety is the spice of life.
_________

Drumroll please…
The Overall Winner is: Washington, DC

That being said, Ottawa is a veeeery close second. I’m truly amazed at how much Canada’s capital has going on. Plus the people there are just so darn nice!
