How to Pass the Hours: Van & Ger

During my Gobi caravan, nearly all day, everyday was spent driving in the van – anywhere from 6-11 hours/day.

Evenings in the Ger provided a bit more space, but lacked electricity.  Basically, modern entertainment wasn’t an option.

It reminded me of road-trips my family would take when I was a child; before even Gameboys or Disc-men existed.  To pass the time we had to get creative.

Passing the Hours in the Van –
Listening to Music (thank god for ipods, at least until the batteries died)

Sharing stories and singing (our guide Deegii had a beautiful voice!)

Playing games – Celebrity Heads (a slightly more difficult game when everyone has varying degrees of exposure to media and different cultural backgrounds)

Napping (the old standard)

Passing the Hours in and around the Ger –
Playing with animals in the area (everything from dogs and cats to goats and horses)

Reading by candlelite (much easier to do in the Ger than in the bumpy van)

Journaling (penny for your thoughts?)

Flying Kites & Playing Frisbee (far more entertaining than we originally thought)

Staying Warm (hiding in sleeping bags and blankets)

Drinking Games (the Irish game Fingers and the Mongolian, This or That were favorites)

Exploring the area around camp

As a self-professed jumping enthusiast, that first photos makes me exceedingly happy.

Afraid I can’t claim fingers as an Irish game, it was passed on to me by a bunch of Aussies & Kiwis. Don’t think I’ve played it since Beijing and definitely not with vodka!
