600 miles
With the help of my father’s packing voodoo, we managed to fit all of my possessions, including the cat and dog, into the back of a Toyota Sienna minivan.
I grabbed D from the airpot and we hit the road.
The drive on I-5 through central California is a route that I’ve driven more times than I can count, so it was a nice easy jaunt with minimal traffic.
Hours of driving later and the sun was setting behind us over the Mojave Desert. Stunning.
Our original goal was to stay the night in Kingman, AZ, but at the last minute we heard about a place called London Bridge. So we shot south as soon as we got into Arizona and found said bridge on the shores of Lake Havasu.
The bridge is the original London Bridge from London. Apparently, Lake Havasu City bought it from the British government and had it dismantled and shipped half way across the world to be the focal point of the city.
The original London Bridge, in a small town in Arizona – go figure! There’s a whole cheesy British town build up at the base of the bridge that we will definitely be checking out in the morning.
By the time we checked into the uber posh Super 8 motel and found dinner at Denny’s (pretty much the only restaurant open) it was already 10:30pm. (There was an hour time-change we hadn’t realized).
Tomorrow will be a packed day of sight-seeing and driving and we are expecting to run into the start of bad weather. Happy Superbowl Sunday Eve!
